“I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself…It is the Lord who judges me.”  I Corinthians 4:3-4b

asically three types of judging seen in scripture:  1)Judging whether or not people are going to heaven or hell/condemnation; 2)Judging whether something is right or wrong and making decisions based on this; and 3)Judging how good or bad we are in comparison to opinions.  This third type of judging is what the Apostle Paul is referring to in this text.  Due to his known past among the Jews and many Gentiles, seemingly he was always defending his right to be an apostle.  Constantly he was reminded of his past.  And even with his success in Christ, he was still compared to other Christian leaders – measured by the success these other leaders achieved.  In this text, it appears that Paul has had enough and says, “I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court.”  This may be refreshing for some of you, especially if you continue to find yourself in positions where people are destructively criticizing some things or everything about you.  If so, this word is for you:  Continue to serve the Lord and know that people do not have a heaven or hell to put you in.  But I believe most of us don’t struggle with judgments from others as much as the judgments we place on ourselves.  I have heard too many Christians say terrible, demeaning, destructive, implosive things about themselves.  Please understand that YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT RIGHT!  So you tried something and it didn’t turn out the way you wanted – don’t you dare call yourself a failure.  So your marriage ended in divorce.  You tried to hold it together.  You prayed for it and over it.  You sought counseling, and it still ended in divorce.  You’re not a failure.  So you’ve been looking for a job and no one has hired you, yet.  You’re not a loser.  YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to say that about yourself.  Paul said, “I do not even judge myself…It is the Lord who judges me.”  Hallelujah!  Now, you know when you’re wrong and when you’re right.  You even know the times that you thought you were right and it turned out you were wrong.  You are still a child of God and God loves you dearly and has invested a lot in you.  Don’t ever call yourself a failure, an idiot, an imbecile, a moron, a loser, a waste, an accident waiting to happen, no good, or a screw-up!  You’re none of those things.  You are a person created in God’s image.  So stop being so hard on yourself.  It’s unnecessary and uncalled for.  Jesus will judge us all.  Keep doing your best to the glory of God and never forget that mistakes are made.  It’s just good to know that the Lord keeps cleaning our slates.
