Theyre worth making the effort to see, and it doesnt take a lot of effort to see themand hear them too. Theyre a local group, a jazz comboall acoustical. Their music is a little bit progressive, a little bit Bob Wills, and includes some of their own creations, filtered through their unique style and expression. Id like the Gypsies even if one of the group wasnt Erik Swansonin fact, when you hear them that will be Erik doing the singing. (If you hadnt known before, Erik is the son of Linda Swanson and big brother to Suzanna.)
Watch The Dallas Morning News Entertainment Section for information on where theyre playing or catch their website, www.texasgypsies.com, or set aside July 22 when theyll be playing at Uncle Calvins Coffee House, Northpark Presbyterian. Uncle Calvins ought to be the perfect venue for The Gypsies: the right size, good acoustics, smoke and alcohol free.
By the way, Erik has resurrected his original band, Cowboys and Indians. Theyre a little bit rock-a-billy, a lot of western swing and loads of fun.
