I’m O.K., You’re O.K.
By now all of you have received your copy of the resignation letter of Bob (M.) Shelton effective September 30, 2005. And, of course, all of us have known for some time of Bob (E.) Shelton’s plans to retire on that same date. Losing both of them certainly gives us reason to pause and think. It’s unfamiliar ground!
Please be assured, though, Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church is going to be O.K.
We are fortunate in that one of our denominational liaisons, the Rev. Betty Youngman, has agreed to serve as pulpit supply until such time as we can find an Interim Pastor. The Personnel Committee of the session has already commenced laying the groundwork toward finding that special person to serve as our Interim. Accomplishing these two things will be two-thirds of our journey toward finding a new permanent pastor. Many of you have been through similar situations; you know it can be done. The rest of us are strong as well, so all things considered, LHPC can and will do it!
See-saw, Margery Daw...
One thing sure and two things certain! The people at LHPC are up to meeting anyone’s challenge!
All through the month of July when you were first asked to help “furnish” the playground area, you came through with generous donations. The church and the CDC appreciate that generosity. Then, as you know, one of our church families in pure confidence of our ability to make things happen, challenged the rest of us to a $2,000 Playground Challenge Gift. To date only a few families have stepped up to meet this latest challenge for a total of $727.00. The donor family has expressed the hope that you will take advantage of this matching gift opportunity (in effect doubling your gift) so that the children in our church and in CDC can really enjoy a safe and sturdy playground.
Can you help meet the challenge? Just think, $10.00 from 125 families would more than do it! Like it says, one thing sure and two things certain, the people at LHPC are up to meeting anyone’s challenge!
Do You Have a Will?
We don’t like to think of the inevitable, but the Katrina Disaster has just made us realize how our lives can change in the twinkling of an eye. We all wish to be prepared and to protect our loved ones. One way to do this is to be sure our estate is divided according to our wishes, and hopefully OUR church is included.
If you don’t have an attorney, I would recommend Lynn Candler, who spoke at our church a few months ago on the importance of having a Will and certain Directives. She helped us add a codicil to our existing will. She is a very caring person, explains legal jargon so that even I can understand it, and her fee is very reasonable.
Please don’t put this off any longer, and do remember OUR church.

Notes From The Session
From the session’s stated meeting held on the evening of September 19, 2005, the following notes are presented for your review:
The session entered into its third segment based on the study of Acts 16:5 under the leadership of Elder Cinda Koch. One more study session remains.
The Rev. Betty Youngman was introduced to the session. The Rev. Youngman serves LHPC as liaison between the Red River Presbytery and LHPC. She will now serve as Pulpit Supply during this transition period while we are without pastors and until an Interim Pastor is employed. The session welcomes the Rev. Youngman on behalf of the congregation.
As a means of meeting any pastoral emergencies that might arise during the period of time we are without a pastor, the Congregational Care Committee is organizing a plan of action utilizing the “Called to Care” program. Further information on this plan will be forthcoming.
Stewardship & Finance Committee announced the date of Sunday, October 23, as Consecration Sunday. (Please mark your calendar for this date as a special Sunday.)
Recognition of the Class of 2008 was made, including Carol Greenman, Bert Hager, Hollie Higgins, Bill Miller and Missy Rodgers. They have been invited to attend session meetings during the rest of the year as guests.
The recommendation of the CDC Committee to employ Ms. Judy Regan as the new Assistant Director for CDC was adopted.
Receipt of a letter from the Young-at-Heart group was acknowledged and their request for permission to have a reception honoring the service of the Rev. Robert M. Shelton to LHPC was approved.
Please feel free to come by the office anytime you wish in order to review the minutes in their entirety.

Quilt Raffle
The women of Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church are having a quilt raffle. The quilt was started by Nell Enright, who was co-moderator of the LHP Women the first year after the church merger. A group of the women, Betty J. Anderson, Martha Boyd, Doris Bruner, Johnie Foster, Pat Massengale, Geri McCleskey, Danna Pool, Glenn Eva Riggs, Sara Secor, Linda Swanson and Eula Watterson, have completed the quilt and are offering it for a raffle.
The quilt is a cathedral window pattern and is a queen sized coverlet measuring 92 X 104 inches. It took approximately 650 hours to complete and contains 598 four-inch squares using 40 yards of muslin with 1,148 colorful windows.
The proceeds from the raffle will go to mission projects such as, providing layettes for babies born at Parkland Hospital, sweat suits for needy children in the Choctaw Presbytery in Oklahoma and three Presbyterian Children’s homes in Texas.
The drawing for the quilt will be held during the Corner Market on November 12. Tickets may be purchased from the church women’s circles.
Ticket prices: $2.00 each, or $10.00 for six tickets or $20.00 for fifteen tickets.

Outreach Corner
The Missions Committee and Reach Out Task Force would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to the members and friends of Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church. Your response to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Response has been overwhelmingly generous. Below is a list of the many ways in which we have helped so many people who have come to the Dallas area seeking shelter during this time of crisis.
A family of 18 staying with a Lake Highlands family received donations of new clothing and other needed items (donations from “Young at Heart”)
Clothing and $400 worth of new items delivered to the White Rock Center of Hope for families in the area seeking assistance.
Hundreds of items donated by LHPC members, friends, neighbors and Scouts (clothing, shoes, toiletries, diapers, sheets, household items, beds, toys, books, food and much more).
20 volunteers gathered on Labor Day to sort the donations of clothing and to assemble 60 Personal Hygiene kits and 50 Children’s Activity kits.
Our own Boy Scout Troop 435 held a carwash on Saturday, September 3, and raised over $1700 to be donated to the hurricane victims and received many donations of needed items from the community. Cub Scout Pack 435 brought in many donations, including toys, coloring books and crayons for the Children’s Activity kits.
8 new fans and many donations delivered to 2 families being sheltered in Oak Cliff (a referral from The Senior Source of Dallas).
A family from New Orleans, shopping at Wal-Mart for items to furnish their temporary apartment, was befriended by an LHPC member and assisted with many of the necessary items. They were also invited to be guests at the Festival of Sound concert.
Household items and a truckload of donated furniture delivered to New Hope Fellowship for several families being sheltered in the Garland area.
Donations delivered to St. Mark Baptist Church (the designated drop-off site for the Greater Dallas Community of Churches) to be used for families being housed after leaving Reunion Arena. Included in the items delivered were a twin bed, 8 air mattresses, towels, sheets, and 10 new Bibles.
100 Children’s Activity Kits (coloring book, crayons, toy or game, stuffed animal and fruit snacks) taken to the Adventure Guides from Good Shepherd Episcopal School to be added to new backpacks full of new school supplies. These were delivered to the Paul Dunbar Learning Center, who took in 44 children being sheltered at Reunion Arena, as well as many more children around the Dallas area.
Monetary donations from LHPC members totaling $700; a donation of $500 from the proceeds raised at the Troop 435 car wash, to be used by LHPC for Disaster Relief; $250 from the “2 cents a meal” program was used to purchase items needed for the Children’s Activity Kits and 8 new fans; and $1000 donated to the White Rock Center of Hope by Gifford Spring Company, matching donations received from the Festival of Sound concert on September 11.
These families will be a part of our community for an extended period of time and we will continue to keep you updated on their progress, as they attempt to rebuild their lives among a city of caring and giving individuals.
New CDC Staff
The CDC Committee and the session are pleased to announce the employment of Ms. Judy Regan who will join the staff as Assistant Director on October 1, 2005. We hope you will make every effort to welcome her.

The session wishes to take this opportunity to welcome the Rev. Betty Youngman who will be serving LHPC as Pulpit Supply until such time as an Interim Pastor can be found. Please take an opportunity to extend your welcome to her as well.

A Note of Thanks . . .
Dear LHPC:
A sincere thank you to those of my church family who helped me have a very wonderful 100th birthday. I appreciated all the lovely cards, the telephone calls, the prayers, and delicious cake. On Sunday, August 21st, many family members met at a local restaurant for a delicious luncheon honoring me, and made the day very special.

Dear LHPC:
Jack and I deeply appreciate your prayers for our son, Steve Walker. After 12 days in ICU, he has moved to a room and is making some progress. We need your continued prayers, please.
Thank you so much,
Nelda Walker
Dear LHPC:
Thank you all for the Birthday cards and well wishes. I appreciate all the love and prayers you send my way.
Love,
Dixie Edwards
Dear LHPC:
How can I thank you for all the prayers, cards, phone calls and other things I received while I was down with my Rotator Cuff surgery? All I can say is that I’ve tried for years to do the same for the church and now it was my time to receive a blessing. I would like to name each of your names as I image your faces, but I know you would not want me to do that. Anyway, I do thank you all for your concerns and inquiries. You all are loving and caring people.
Thank you,
Bert Hager
