Dedication Sunday: August 21st
Ded·i·ca·tion – 1: An act or rite of dedicating to a divine being or to a sacred use.
2: A devoting or setting aside for a particular purpose.
After all these months of renovation, inconvenience, dust, cold and heat, we have all begun to comfortably settle into the wonderful space that is now our new Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church home. Before we can fully be about God’s business, we now look to one more very important, special event in our church’s exciting development – that is the formal dedication of our new building.
Planned for Sunday, August 21, in the afternoon, this wonderful celebration will include many people who have been a part of our church life over the years, including former pastors and congregants, members of the PCUSA and Cumberland Presbyteries, CDC teachers and students, as well as community members and leaders – all joining us to celebrate the formal dedication of our church to the purpose God has set for it.
At a glance, elements of this event include: Keynote Speaker: Cynthia Campbell, Ph.D., President, McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Cynthia received her Ph.D. from S.M.U. and served as the first associate pastor at Northminster, as well as having taught at Austin Seminary.
Special Music: LHPC Chancel Choir, individual musicians and St. Luke’s United Methodist Choir. Following the dedication service, a reception will be held.
If you have questions or input, please talk with any of the committee members: Robert M. Shelton, Missy Rodgers, Martha Boyd, Chuck Ramsay, Cris Emrich, Chris Jacobie, Ginger Williams. Please mark your calendar now and plan to bring your family and friends to participate in this sacred dedication of Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church as we honor our past and celebrate our future as the people of God.
LHPC Pictorial Directory
Mark your calendar! Filming dates for the new pictorial directory will be August 24th—27th. Appointment sheets will be available during the third week of July.
For further information, please call Robbie Meusel at 214-327-5400 or Martha Boyd at 214-341-4747 or the church office at 214-348-2133.
Robert's Ramblings
Texas Gypsies
They’re worth making the effort to see, and it doesn’t take a lot of effort to see them—and hear them too. They’re a local group, a jazz combo—all acoustical. Their music is a little bit progressive, a little bit Bob Wills, and includes some of their own creations, filtered through their unique style and expression. I’d like the Gypsies even if one of the group wasn’t Erik Swanson—in fact, when you hear them that will be Erik doing the singing. (If you hadn’t known before, Erik is the son of Linda Swanson and big brother to Suzanna.)
Watch The Dallas Morning News Entertainment Section for information on where they’re playing or catch their website, www.texasgypsies.com, or set aside July 22 when they’ll be playing at Uncle Calvin’s Coffee House, Northpark Presbyterian. Uncle Calvin’s ought to be the perfect venue for The Gypsies: the right size, good acoustics, smoke and alcohol free.
By the way, Erik has resurrected his original band, Cowboys and Indians. They’re a little bit rock-a-billy, a lot of western swing and loads of fun.

Notes From The Session
Just to keep you up to date, the following are notes gleaned from the minutes of the stated session meeting of June 20, 2005. . .
Clerk presented a letter from Grace Presbytery stating that the Presbytery is looking for new headquarters in Irving which would house not only the Presbytery but also the Synod of the Sun, Faith Hospice and the Texas Presbyterian Foundation. Other groups have been invited to join this group. Notice will be given when the move is to be effective and the exact address of same when accomplished.
The new Communications Committee will be chaired by Ginger Williams. Steve Moore is session liaison. Other committee core members are Zoé Jacobie, Cinda Koch and Cris Emrich. This committee, as are all others, is open to all who wish to participate in its ministry.
The Rev. Robert M. Shelton and several members of the group of LHPCers who attended Act 16:5 reviewed this new and innovative program for considering a new approach to church growth as presented by Grace Presbytery at a special meeting held April 23-24. An hour and one-half of the session meeting was devoted to their presentation and the succeeding discussion. Session was asked to devote the next several months in study of the material presented to them so that an educated decision can be made as to whether or not this would be a good plan for LHPC.
Nominating Committee announced their selection of Hollie Higgins as successor to the vacant chair for the Worship Committee. Session approved and voted in favor of this election.
The clerk announced the request of Tod and Shannon Sellheim for the baptism of their new son, Noah Wayne Sellheim. The sacrament will be held on July 3, 2005, and Jan Gifford will serve as elder sponsor.
Cecil Dass presented a report concerning the proposed new playground equipment for use of the church and the CDC. The proposed workdays of June 24-25 has been postponed. Session agreed that CDC may request contributions from the congregation for this purpose.
The Building Dedication Committee announced that the date of August 21 has been choosen which the new facility will be dedicated and that the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Campbell will be guest speaker. The Rev. Campbell is a former associate minister of Northminster P.C.
Although it is not possible to post the minutes at this time, they are available for reading in the church offices at any time.
From the LHPC Library...
Please check your shelves at home for possible Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church library materials. If they are not in use, please return to the work-in-progress library, located in the Small Conference Room. The LHPC Staff has asked me to work on the project and as Sherlock Holmes would say, “The game is afoot.”
—Ann Shelton
Communications Committee Created
Wasn’t it great to read about the church in those news articles and media coverage generated around the time of the LHPC Open House? In large measure credit for getting the word out goes to an informal group of our folks who know how to work with the media. We need as much good coverage as we can get, and we need attractive means of spreading the news among ourselves. So, the session has created the new Communications Committee. Ginger Williams is the chair; Steve Moore serves as session liaison to the committee; other core members include Zoé Jacobie, Cinda Koch and Cris Emrich.

LHPC Women’s News
Lake Highlands Women would like to express appreciation to the following people:
Missy Rodgers for her untiring devotion to mission work. She was selected as our LHP Woman of the Year with a perpetual membership in Cumberland Church Women.
Doris Bruner who made 25 cot covers for the CDC from material donated by a friend of Geri McCleskey.
The Koch family who erected the shelving in the spacious new women’s closet.
Summer Opportunities
Anyone who is interested in helping with the Cathedral Window Quilt is asked to contact Martha Boyd. She is planning a quilting session this summer.
Collections to be made in Fellowship Hall
Save the labels from Campbell Soup products. Beside the soup labels, Pace Picante Sauce, Swanson, Pepperidge Farm, Prego and Vlasic are some of the other products that are useful. For a listing of the different kinds of labels, lids, etc. to save, see the listing on the receptacle in Fellowship Hall. These labels are used by our CDC.
Save commemorative postage stamps. Be sure not to damage the stamp by leaving at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the envelope around the stamp. (If in doubt include the entire envelope.) The stamps are sold to stamp companies. Every penny of the money goes to purchase Bibles and printing of Christian Education materials for the Presbyterian Church in Zaire, and to purchase textbooks and resource books for The Theological and Leadership Development of the United Church of Jamaica. ITLD trains pastors for churches in rural areas of Jamaica.
Bring old eyeglasses, frames or lenses. They are given to Lions Clubs for their project that helps the needy to see.
Men’s Fellowship Supports Youth Church Camp
The Men’s Fellowship has always helped to support our kids going to summer camp. This year is no exception. Since the start of the building program, a lot of the money-making activities have been disrupted due to our not being able to use the Fellowship Hall for the Corner Market or the kitchen for any possible fund-raising meals for various projects.
The need is this: Meg Richardson informs us that there are a total of ten kids who have signed up for camp. The Men’s Fellowship has agreed to commit to help support our kids by paying half of the cost. This equates to approximately $1,800.
Starting with the second Sunday in July, the 10th, the Men will be offering a continuous serving of breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (This is subject to being carried through until noon in the event of a dull sermon.)
We would love to see all of you there on July 10th, and even if you aren’t that hungry, we will be happy to take your check or cash. Please indicate that your donation is for summer camp.
Your contributions are appreciated.
—Thank you

Robert's Ramblings
Hallelujah Sunday, April 17
After a year under construction and a yearlong fellowship dinner famine-except for a couple of picnic-type hot dog and hamburger bills of fare last summer- we finally did it again. We had a real Presbyterian casserole-laden fellowship dinner. And it was great! That person was indeed wise who suggested the name “Hallelujah Sunday” for our first dinner in the new fellowship hall.
We finally had a proper venue in which to recognize members of the Session, Class of 2004; they received plaques of appreciation. And we recognized members of the Property Development Committee for their work since the committee’s creation in 2000. They received handcrafted crosses made from wood salvaged during the sanctuary remodeling. Also, Bill Miller received the “Fine Print Award” for guiding the church through contract negotiations with the architect, contractor and lending agencies. And Ladell Ritchey and Hollis Jacobie received the “Plumb and True Award” for representing the church and oversight during construction.
The formal dedication service will follow at a later date. In the meantime, Hallelujah Sunday was neat and memorable.

Christian Education
Come one! Come all! Let’s all find a class on Sunday Morning!
Christian Education is back in full swing at the church. All the previous classes have resumed in the new education wing of the new building. We have the three previously existing adult classes taught by John, Cris and Norma. The church now offers a full selection of children’s and youth classes on Sunday morning. In the children’s age group, we have classes for: Pre-kindergarten, K-Second grade, Third grade –Fifth grade, Sixth grade through High School.
I want to invite you to join us for learning more about our faith, our church and ourselves!
See you Sunday in class!!!
Chuck Ramsay, for the Christian Education Committee
Thank You from CDC Recovery Committee
A big THANK YOU to those of you who have supported the CDC through your financial contributions over the last year. Contributions designated for the CDC for 2004 and 2005, total more than $21,000. Once the neighborhood saw the playground equipment at our new facility, the CDC started receiving phone calls from parents seeking information on our program. Latest combined enrollment figures for CDC and PDO (Parent’s Day Out) is 106 children. At the end of February, we had a combined enrollment of 70 children for the CDC and PDO. All involved are very excited by the new enrollment.
Through March 31, the CDC had a year-to-date loss of $19,761.42. Even with an increase in fees and enrollment, it will be difficult to recover this loss. We appreciate your continued financial support of the CDC through the rest of 2005.

Stewardship/Faith Testimonial
Paul and Renee Kunde respond to the question: How did you decide to make a significant gift to the building campaign?
“Describing our decision process to support the current building capital campaign has been challenging and difficult to express.
Stewardship has been described as being entrusted with something of value on behalf of someone else . As part of God’s family we are entrusted with the responsibility to continue Christ’s mission on earth and minister to our church family.
Perhaps “decision process” is not the appropriate phrase. It suggests an analytical step-by-step procedure ending in a calculated result. “An action from the heart” seems more appropriate. As a member of our church once said, “It’s just the right thing to do.”
Renee & Paul
Do you have a stewardship/faith story to share? If you do, please send your story to to J.B. Pendergrass.
Notes From The Session
Just to keep you up to date, the following are notes gleaned from the minutes of the stated session meetings of March 21, 2005 and April 18, 2005.
Property Committee announced the formation of a subcommittee established for the purpose of overseeing the interior décor of the new facilities. It was further announced that the services of an interior decorator would be utilized to assure that the facility is decorated in a tasteful manner.
The session also formally adopted the new Building Use Policy presented by the Property Committee . Anyone wishing to use a room or rooms in the church will be ask to register that need through the church office.
Property Development announced that new shelving has been purchased and will be installed in the storage areas where needed.
Stewardship & Finance reminded session of the upcoming program which will address the importance of estate planning.
Note was taken of the deaths of Bob Johnson who died April 18, 2005, and Bessie Swearingen who died on January 12, 2005.
The names of six new members were recorded, to-wit: Maxie Hardin, Thelma Waters, Andrew Dass, Chris Dass, Kyle Koch and Julia Halliburton. In addition, former members, Diana Smith and Debbie Scroggins, have been reinstated. Raylene Mattingly has transferred her membership to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton.
The CDC Committee reported that in the three and one-half weeks during which the CDC has been open in the new facility enrollment has grown from 70 to 101 children. Three new staff persons have also been employed.
The Christian Education Committee reported in March that plans are underway to hold a children’s church service for children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Missions Committee announced that plans are in the making to hold Yoga classes at LHPC for those interested. Dates and times will be announced when available.
A committee was appointed to make plans for Dedication Sunday sometime later in the year.
Although it is not possible to post the minutes at this time, they are available for reading in the church offices at any time.
A Letter From Jenny
Dear LHPC Friends:
You did it; you really, really did it!
O-o-o-h! I can hardly believe how super nice our new home for CDC is! Gosh! The rooms are so big and new and pretty and wonderful! We’ve only been here a little over two weeks and did you know our CDC family has already grown? We now have 101 children with four more enrolled for August! Dr. Bob says that’’s a 28% increase (whatever that means)! Anyway it sounds great, grand and wonderful. We also have three new teachers in with a whole new group of children—they don’t get to come out and play, though, because they’re just little bitty babies. Misses Mary, Meme stays in and plays with them. The summer camp program will start in June and I can hardly wait to see what Miss Laura will have lined up for us to do! Well, I gotta go! Please come see us some day. We’d love the chance personally to say thanks for sharing this grand new place with us!
Love, Jenny

A Seminar Conducted by Lynne Candler, Attorney — Sunday, May 15th after 11:00 a.m. worship in the Fellowship Hall. A light lunch and baby sitting will be provided. The entire congregation and friends of LHPC are urged to attend!
The sad saga of Terry Schiavo has brought home to each of us the acute need for every adult to have proper legal documents in place to protect us and our families in life and in death. What documents are needed? How do I secure them? Come to the seminar on May 15th. This is attorney Lynne Candler’s speciality. You will find her very knowledgeable and easy to understand. If you have any questions, please call J.B. Pendergrass at 214-348-3843 or the Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church office at 214-348-2133.
Do We Have Your Address?
A few weeks ago a request was made of you, via the bulletin, to inform the office of your email address. Have you given us yours? The reason for our need is simple. From time to time we’d like to be able to contact as many of our members at the same time as possible. Email is a vehicle for doing this. Won’t you help by confirming your email address with the office or by sending us your new address if you’ve never recorded it with the office? Your help on this project will be appreciated!
Congratulations
